Another victim!

It’s hard to watch this video all the way to the end, it’s like watching a murder happen live. Oh, sure it was, but they’ll say it was an arrestment that went wrong. A scene you wouldn’t have imagined. Nonetheless, you can actually talk about it thanks to this video, in contrast to all these other cases. What if those outraged witnesses hadn’t had the courage to film the whole tragedy?
A black man George Floyd thrown on the ground, handcuffed but immobilized by the policeman who is forcing his knee on the suspect’s neck. He can’t breathe, he’s in pain, he’s screaming for help, implores the police. One of them tries to keep passers-by at a distance, no compassion for the man who is suffocating. This man in his forty’s cries, faints and then dies once in hospital. The question that still pops in my mind is why keep forcing on him while he was suffocating and told you that he would follow you into the car if you stopped strangling him.
As a result of my research I understood that this method is called immobilization by strangulation and especially that it is « technically forbidden ». So, did the policeman know what he was doing? Was it intentional? Just eight (8) minutes, which might not be enough to understand but which was enough to drive a man to his death, a man who had committed only a minor offence. It makes you wonder what could have happened to them to make them lose their humanity.
The Black Lives Matter movement
The case of George is not an isolated case, it is only one example among so many deplorable acts. This explains the birth of the Black Lives Matter protest movement following the deaths of black people by the police. I’m sharing a few examples with you because there are so many.
2014: Eric Garner, a black man who died after being asphyxiated during his arrest by white police officers in New York City (https://www.20minutes.fr/monde/2585483-20190819-new-york-policier-accuse-avoir-asphyxie-eric-garner-renvoye ).
2014: Michael Brown, a young unarmed black man shot dead by a white policeman in Ferguson. (https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-30207808 )
2016: A black motorist killed by a police officer during routine police check in Minnesota. Philando Castile, 32, was shot in front of his girlfriend and a little girl in a shock sequence also filmed live. (http://une-autre-histoire.org/philando-castile/ )
2019: Willie McCoy, 20 years old, was shot at least 25 times by 6 policemen after falling asleep in his car in the parking lot of a fast-food restaurant (https://www.lexpress.fr/actualite/monde/amerique-nord/un-noir-americain-endormi-crible-de-balles-par-la-police_2063422.html ).

In the USA, police violence and racial discrimination are always the subject of fierce debate. According to a study based on figures compiled by Fatal Encounters and the National Vital Statistics System, « Black men are 2.5 times more likely to be killed by the police. »
George Floyd’s family denounced « excessive and inhumane » use of force and accused the police of racism. A murder prosecution is being considered. George Floyd’s family lawyer, Benjamin Crump, denounced « abusive, excessive and inhumane use of force » for a « non-violent » offence, and called for an end to « racial profiling and the minimisation of black life by the police ». I would not want to be pessimistic, but in most of the cases mentioned above, the police officers were not convicted but just dismissed from the police service. Well, I would hope that this case will be different.
The crime of being born black
Although I’ve been thinking all morning, I still find it hard to understand how people still manage to be racist, especially in a country that is supposed to be a dreamland. The outrage of LeBron James, Steve Kerr and Stephen Jackson, those black athletes who against all expectations are applauded every time they bring billions of dollars to America is something I cannot help but see. Of course, my writing cannot bring back from the grave George Floyd or all the others, but as Roland Barthes wrote so well: « Remembrance is the beginning of writing, and writing is in turn the beginning of death (so young that one undertakes it). » I wish we could remember George Floyd, Philando Castile, Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Willie McCoy, Breonna Taylor and all those victims because Black Lives Matter….

Une autre victime!
C’est difficile de visionner cette vidéo jusqu’à la fin, c’est comme assister à un meurtre en direct. Oh bien sûr c’en était un mais ils diront que c’est une arrestation qui a mal tourné. Une scène que l’on n’aurait pas imaginée mais dont on peut parler à la différence de tous ces autres cas. Et s’il n’y avait pas eu ces témoins révoltés qui ont eu assez de courage pour filmer toute cette tragédie ?
Un homme noir George Floyd plaqué au sol, menotté mais immobilisé par le policier forçant son genou sur le cou du suspect. Il ne respire plus, il a mal, il crie au secours, implore les policiers. L’un d’entre eux essai de tenir les passants à distance, aucune compassion pour l’homme qui suffoque. Ce monsieur de la quarantaine pleure, s’évanouit puis meurt une fois à l’hôpital. La question qui me trotte toujours à l’esprit, c’est pourquoi continuer à forcer sur son coup pendant qu’il suffoquait et vous affirmait qu’il vous suivrait dans la voiture si vous arrêtez de l’étrangler.
Suite a mes recherches j’ai compris que cette méthode s’appelait l’immobilisation par étranglement et surtout qu’elle est « techniquement interdites ». Du coup, le policier savait -il ce qu’il faisait ? Était-ce intentionnel ?
Rien que huit (8) minutes, qui pourrait ne pas suffire à comprendre mais qui ont suffi à conduire un homme à la mort, un homme qui n’avait commis qu’un délit mineur. C’est à se demander ce qui a pu leur arriver pour qu’il perdre leur humanité.
Le mouvement Black Lives Matter
Le cas de Georges n’est pas un cas isolé, ce n’est qu’un exemple parmi tant d’actes déplorables. C’est ce qui explique la naissance du mouvement de protestation Black Lives Matter suite aux décès de personnes noires aux mains de la police. Je partage avec vous quelques exemples car il en existe tellement.

Les violences policières et les discriminations raciales font tout le temps sujet de débats houleux aux USA. Selon une étude basée sur les chiffres compilés par Fatal Encounters et le National Vital Statistics System, « les hommes noirs ont 2,5 fois plus de risques de se faire tuer par la police. »
La famille de George Floyd a dénoncé un usage « excessif et inhumain » de la force et accusé la police de racisme. Des poursuites judiciaires pour meurtre sont envisagées. L’avocat de la famille de George Floyd, Benjamin Crump, a dénoncé un usage « abusif, excessif et inhumain de la force » pour un délit « non-violent », et demandé la fin du « profilage racial et (de) la minimisation des vies noires par la police ». Je ne voudrais pas être pessimiste mais pour la plupart des cas cités plus haut, les policiers n’ont pas été condamnés mais juste radiés des rangs de la police. J’ose espérer que ce cas sera différent.
Le délit d’être né noir
Bien qu’ayant cogité toute la matinée, j’ai encore du mal à comprendre comment jusqu’à nos jours des personnes arrivent à être racistes, pire dans un pays censé être une terre de rêve. J’ai vu l’indignation de LeBron James, Steve Kerr et Stephen Jackson, ces athlètes noirs qui contre toutes attentes sont applaudis à chaque fois qu’ils rapportent des milliards de dollars à l’Amérique.
Certes mon écrit ne peut nous rendre George Floyd ni tous les autres, mais comme Roland Barthes l’a si bien écrit : « le souvenir est le début de l’écriture et l’écriture est à son tour le commencement de la mort (si jeune qu’on l’entreprenne). »
Je souhaite que nous puissions nous souvenir de George Floyd, Philando Castile, Michael Brown,Eric Garner, Willie McCoy , Breonna Taylor et toutes ces victimes LA VIE DES NOIRS COMPTE AUSSI.
